Big Picture Lessons to be Learned
What we are living through is quite extraordinary. Never in history, have we gotten the opportunity to see what would happen if the world simply stopped.
Paul Monks, professor of air pollution at the University of Leicester, predicted there will be important lessons to learn.
“We are now, inadvertently, conducting the largest-scale experiment ever seen,” he said.
“Are we looking at what we might see in the future if we can move to a low-carbon economy? Not to denigrate the loss of life, but this might give us some hope from something terrible. To see what can be achieved.”
"If we can think about how to prepare for climate change like a pandemic, maybe there will be a positive outcome to all of this," said Christopher Jones, lead developer of the CoolClimate Network, an applied research consortium at the University of California.
After the immediate health crisis and the ensuing economic winter is over, the world will face a choice.
Do we want to go back to the status quo, or do we want to use these learnings to rally together and reduce emissions worldwide?
